Per an announcement from the White House COVID-19 Response Team, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has presented its new guidelines for fully vaccinated people reentering society and coexisting with those who have yet to be vaccinated.
People who are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC, are considered those who are two weeks removed from garnering both rounds of either Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. It was not noted as to whether those falling under fully-vaccinated status also included the new Johnson & Johnson shot, which only requires people to have a single dose.
“Covid-19 continues to exert a tremendous toll on our nation. Like you, I want to be able to return to everyday activities and engage with our friends, families, and communities,” said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky. “Science, and the protection of public health, must guide us as we begin to resume these activities. Today’s action represents an important first step. It is not our final destination. As more people get vaccinated, levels of Covid-19 infection decline in communities, and as our understanding of Covid immunity improves, we look forward to updating these recommendations to the public.”
CDC Precautions for Those Who Are Fully Vaccinated
You are still required to wear a mask AND physically distance when visiting those who are yet to be vaccinated from multiple households, regardless of being fully vaccinated, yourself.
Those fully vaccinated still must wear a mask AND physically distance themselves from those at increased risk of COVID-19, especially if those are persons from a multiple household with family members at high risk, themselves.
Privileges for Those Who Are Fully Vaccinated, as Stated by the CDC
You may skip testing and quarantine if you are exposed to someone who has COVID-19 if you are fully vaccinated. However, the caveat is that the person infected must be asymptomatic and you should still take two full weeks to monitor your symptoms as well.
Vaccinated people can coexist with others who are fully vaccinated as well, indoors, without masks.
If you are fully vaccinated, you may visit those in single households who are unvaccinated, but they must be at low risk for severe disease. Please note that you do not need a mask in this scenario, but it is still encouraged to wear one.
The Bottom Line, According to the CDC
Even if you are fully vaccinated, the best thing you can do to help suppress the COVID-19 pandemic and end it is to continue to wear a mask, physically distance, practice good handwashing hygiene and avoid crowds, altogether, including in poorly ventilated sectors. Lastly, be sure to get tested if you feel sick, despite being vaccinated, because you can still contribute to the virus being spread.
