Winter is one of the most-daunting seasons when it comes to sickness and meeting blood donations demands, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is estimated that 13,000 daily donations are needed to maintain a healthy abundance of blood for the U.S. population.
How to Observe the Month-Long Event
Plain and simple, donate blood. The only thing it will cost you is roughly an hour of your time. Make it an event by bringing a book or headphones to listen to your favorite podcast or playlist.
Host a blood drive. All you need is 10 people from your neighborhood, place of employment, etc., to help save a possible 30 lives. It is a great way to give back to your community and spend some quality time with people.
Spread the word. Take to social media to build awareness, share your experience with others and encourage your followers and friends to do the same!
Did You Know?
When we donate blood, laboratory scientists examine our samples for possible diseases, including infectious ones, which could save our lives.
It is estimated that, in the U.S., alone, there is someone in need of blood every few seconds and without lifesaving transfusions, nearly 5 million people would die each year.
You can donate blood every eight weeks in helping ensure healthcare facilities have the necessary blood supply readily available.
If you start donating blood at 17-years-old and maintain an eight-week donation schedule, you will have given almost 48 gallons of blood by the time your reach your mid-70s (Source: BNL).
The American Red Cross
The American Red Cross (ARC) reports that each time a single pint of blood is donated, therein lies the potential to save a possible three people. In fact, it is estimated that almost 40% of the U.S. population can donate blood, but only 10% of people actively give.
The ARC is comprised of almost a 90% volunteer workforce and is always seeking disaster and pandemic advocates. Volunteers respond to over 60,000 disasters on an annual basis and the organization has 25,000 active service volunteers, roughly 15,000, of which, are nursing students. Search openings HERE.
Lastly, if you opt to give blood at any point between January 1-20, the ARC will enter you for a chance at winning a 65-inch television and $500 gift card, as well as a grand prize of two tickets to the 2022 Superbowl in Los Angeles. More info HERE.
It is not just the ARC that runs donations. There are plenty of organizations seeking plasma, most of them providing plenty of incentives to give as well, like OneBlood.
