Early data from Moderna finds that its potential COVID-19 vaccine, dubbed mRNA-1273, has a high success rate and is almost 95% effective, leapfrogging Pfizer’s data report of being 90% effective.
Moderna’s trial consisted of 30,000 test participants, of which 15,000 were given a placebo. The months following saw 90 of them contracted COVID-19, while 11 of them experienced major symptoms. The other 15,000 were given the company’s vaccine and only five test subjects developed COVID-19. Though, none of them developed major symptoms. The side effects were also minimal as only a few experienced head- and body aches.
The company will next apply for authorization, following the next round of safety data, to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The vaccine, similar to that of Pfizer’s, have high results because both medications promote body immunity activation, via messenger RNA (mRNA). The genetic concoctions, once injected, make antibodies which break down the spikes that make up the Coronavirus. While both companies have proven safety properties, Moderna currently holds the advantage, because it can be maintained at -20 degree Celsius, which makes it more readily available in pharmacies. It can also stay true for up to 30 days in a refrigerator as well.
We could be on the cusp of having a vaccine for the holiday season, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci, our nation’s leading infectious disease medical expert. In the early stages, there won’t be enough of a vaccine for the entire country, so the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has announced healthcare professionals, essential workers and those most vulnerable to the virus will all be first in line.
