It is World Hand Hygiene Day and ‘Seconds Saves Lives – Clean Your Hands!’

This year’s slogan for World Hand Hygiene Day is, ‘Seconds Saves Lives – Clean Your Hands!’, and that could not be more important in 2021 as we continue to combat the COVID-19 pandemic and better protect ourselves against future outbreaks.

The global observance aims to promote proper hand hygiene within the healthcare system, but also in supporting the cause for improved hand hygiene among the world’s population as well. In achieving effective hand hygiene, it starts at the point-of-care, per the patient, healthcare professional and treatment, which may involve multiple other specialists.

Washing your hands, especially before preparing and eating food, eating out at a restaurant, after engaging in physical activities, using the bathroom and after experiencing respiratory symptoms is key in not only protecting yourself, but others in our communities as well.

The Five-Step Process for Optimal Handwashing

  1. Step 1: Wet your hands.
  2. Step 2: Add soap.
  3. Step 3: Bring soap and water to a lather.
  4. Step 4: Massage hands with lather, interlocking fingers, scrubbing fingernails, thumbs, and the backs of hands as well. Sing the Birthday Song twice while doing this method.
  5. Step 5: Wash lather off and, before turning water off, dry your hands, while using the same paper towel to turn the faucet off.
